Born in the Allegheny West neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised in Oakland, California, Stein moved to Paris in 1903, making France her home for the remainder of her life. A literary innovator and pioneer of Modernist literature, SteinÂ’s work broke with the narrative, linear, and temporal conventions of the 19th-century. She was also known as a collector of Modernist art. She is famous for the quotation, “A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.” She is also credited with popularizing the term, “The Lost Generation.”
She attended Radcliffe College during the 1890s and experimented with stream-of-consciousness writing, which would develop into an important element of her modernist literary style.
